ADVENTURE HONEYMOON: CHERRAPUNJI

Meghalaya has over 1500 documented caves in the state, out of which some 980 have been partially or fully explored. Meghalaya also has Krem Liat Prah, the longest cave in India at about 30,957m in length. So Meghalaya is indeed a wonderful caving destination for adventurers, explorers and people who consider caving to be a sport.

But did you know that Meghalaya, and indeed its city of Cherrapunji, are fantastic honeymoon destinations within India?

If you are a sporty couple or just a couple who would like to break away from the trend of romantic beaches and the highly-cliched hill stations of Europe, you should book an adventure-filled Cherrapunji honeymoon.

Trekking on untrodden pathways through thick, green forests, hiking up hills to catch the most gorgeous waterfalls cascading down, taking in a swim in the waterfall pools below and exploring the labyrinth of exciting caves are just a few couples’ activities you can do here. Of course, taking Instagram-worthy couple pics at surreal locations such as at the famous double-decker living root bridges are a honeymoon bonus!

So if you are keen on taking the most novel honeymoon, a honeymoon of your dreams, visit Cherrapunji. And more specifically, go explore the following 4 caves:

01.

Mawsmai Cave

Mawsmai Cave in Khasi Hills is quite a popular tourist attraction in Cherrapunji. The narrow, limestone caves of Mawsmai are known for their low-hanging roofs, narrow passageways and uneven footing, which means that they are challenging and exciting to explore. The cave is long, about 150m in length and has good lighting inside for better viewing of the limestone formation, stalactites and stalagmites.

Wear proper clothing as you enter the cave. You need to walk a few stairs to get to the caves and even when inside, there is a fair bit of crouching, squeezing and climbing (over rocks) involved, all of which could be on a wet floor at any given time of the year. This is hardly a surprise when one knows that Cherrapunji gets the highest annual rainfall in the world.

To enter the caves, you need to purchase an entrance ticket for a nominal price of Rs. 15 per ticket. The ticket window also stocks on maps that contain information on the cave’s narrow pathways. The cave is open for visitors between 9:30AM and 5:30PM. There are ample shops and restaurants near the cave, and there is also a safe car park.

By the way, I thought you’d like to know. Mawsmai Caves are also known as the haunted caves or the scary caves. Find a villager to tell you the story once you’re there. Arwah Caves

The Arwah caves are some of the newer caves that have been opened up the public here. These caves are an archaeologists delight for many perfectly preserved fossils have been found in these limestone formations, fossils that date back millions of years. The caves are cold and dark, not to mention that the floor is often wet. So wear proper clothes with non-skid footwear and be sure to carry a torch.

You have to take a brisk, 20-minute walk through Shynna forest to get to the caves. Arwah caves are neither as difficult to explore as the Mawsmai caves, nor are they usually as crowded. You can thus explore at your pace and enjoy the soothing south of flowing water that echoes through the cave’s labyrinths.

There is a restaurant in the parking area that serves local Meghalayan food. This is a great thing as you will likely be famished by the time you finish your cave exploration. You must purchase a ticket of Rs 20 per person before you enter the cave and the cave is open to the public between 9:30AM and 5:30PM.

Garden of Caves

The Garden of Caves in Laitmawsiang, about 15kms from Cherrapunji town centre, is an absolute must-visit destination for honeymooning couples. Garden of Caves is an all-in-one opportunity to enjoy beautiful flora and fauna, a collection of caves and beautiful waterfalls that you can even get wet under. The Garden of Caves is open for tourists between 8AM and 5PM. You have to pay an entrance fee here (which varies because it is calculated per person as well as per camera) as well as a parking fee.

The Garden of Caves is a photographer’s paradise, especially so in the monsoons or just after the monsoons have passed. The attraction is made up of about 8 waterfalls and several small and large caves, each with lovely rock formations. The garden also has an attractive rope bridge that adds to the romance of the enthralling locations. As you walk through, another source of amusement here are the names given to the different attractions – King’s Cave, King’s Shower, Mother’s Womb, Healing Water and Heart Puddle are a few.

If you are so inclined, you get right under the waterfalls here. Even if you are not, be prepared to get wet and be sure to carry a spare set of clothes. Despite so many different attractions right at one place, you cannot get lost here as each entrant is provided with a local guide. Go early and take your time to see everything. Don’t hurry your photographs either as this is exactly where you can get those stunning wallpaper-like photos!

Mawmluh Caves

Krem Mawmluh or Mawmluh Caves, the 8th longest caves in India, are not for the faint-hearted. Exploring these 7km long caves required proper gear, training and experience. For the relatively uninitiated, you can try the caving experience offered by the Meghalaya Caving Association to go explore these. If you take a local guide in with you, they will only take you in for about 4kms before they turn back.

This Cave is of immense archaeological importance as it was here that they discovered evidence of a major cataclysmic event about 4200 years ago, a discover of such import that the current age in archaeological terms is not called the Meghalaya age. Caving in this cave is tough due to treacherous footing and often pitch-black darkness in some areas. There is also a lot of climbing, crawling and crouching involved.

This cave is an exciting experience for explorers. There are multiple chambers, lots of stalactite- stalagmite formations, underground rivers, holes and even underground gardens! It is like an unreal world outside of what you know as the real world. As you go further in, you marvel at nature’s creations, especially so when you see the marble chamber sparkling with white marble stones.

As incredible experiences go, you experience another one as you tread through the water and shine your torches in. Your light is sure to catch a fish or two, completely blind – fish that have evolved to be completely sightless due to the darkness around them! Oh and before you let this scare you, don’t forget there are bats too!

You need at least 3 hours inside the cave to explore it properly, so plan your entry time accordingly. The caves are open 24hrs but preferred entry is between 8Am and 4PM.

Living Root Bridges – A Perfect Example of Nature and Man Relationship

A UNESCO marked heritage site, the living root bridges, is a perfect example of the beautiful relationship between man and nature. The entangled thick roots of positively ancient trees are a gorgeous sight to behold. These have grown over a period of time to offer more than strengthening support. These are not bridges that can take you across from one end to another, safely and securely.

Touted as one of the greatest attraction spots in the Meghalaya region, the living root bridges are carefully grown and meticulously made by the Jaintia and the Khasi tribes who have been trained to do so. They not only grow the trees alongside the banks of the stream but also tread the bridge and make it very strong. Living root bridges can easily carry approximately fifty people.

The most famous of the amazing living root bridges here, is the Umshiang Double Decker Living Root Bridge found in Nongriat village. Reaching this arch bridge requires you to hike through beautiful forests and this is quite an excitement for adventure lovers. The suspension bridge deserves a visit once you are in Meghalaya.

Nohkalikai Waterfalls – India’s Tallest Plunge Waterfall

There is something incredibly humbling when you look at Nohkalikai Falls because it is one of the tallest plunges in India. With a 335 meters drop, the waterfall is quite simply one of the most beautiful ones in the state of Meghalaya. The trek to this height is in itself very adventurous, taking you through the evergreen rainforest of the renowned Khasi hill.

If you hike to the top of the falls, there are some shallow sections in the vicinity where you can take a dip, and take some memorable photographs. You can also enjoy a gorgeous panoramic view once you land on the tableland. The gushing waters with their gurgling sound befit the serene ambience with which Meghalaya is synced. And yes, you can go for a truly memorable picnic by Nohkalikai Falls too.

Mawlynnong Village – The Cleanest Village in Asia

Mawlynnong village is one of the cleanest villages in the entire continent of Asia. It has now gained the title of “Gods Own Garden”. Maintained by the traditional Khasis, the village is known for its fruit orchards and lush green surroundings. The village is known for its famous living root bridge, which is prepared by the roots of the Ficus Elastica and it attracts thousands of tourists. The village is also famous for its old Church of the Epiphany which is literally a hidden paradise tucked between the green forests. Bamboo structured tree-houses surround it, inviting people to climb up and view the lands.

Want to feast your eyes on a crystal clear river? Then Dawki is your go-to place. Visit the picturesque town that’s nestled between Bangladesh and India, resting on the quaint Jaintia Hills. The river is clean and is a refreshing change for those living in polluted cities. The area is also famous for boat rides in the famous Umgot River and this attracts many tourists to the town. Floating in the clean water in the serene atmosphere is an enjoyment of a different kind. Dawki also conducts various boating competitions which are famous all over the country. The simplicity of the place is in its low key appeal. It comes from its underrated cold waters and suspension bridges that are truly unique to Meghalaya. Diskit monastery is one of the oldest and most famous of Ladakh monasteries located in the Nubra valley. Meghalaya & Her History

As beautiful as the state of Meghalaya is, its attractive and meaningful name feels justified. The word Meghalaya is made up of two Sanskrit words. Megh + Aalaya = Meghalaya.

In Sanskrit, ‘Megh’ means ‘cloud’ and ‘Aalaya’ means ‘abode’ or ‘home’. By this definition, Meghalaya means ‘abode of clouds’ or called ‘house of clouds’ just as it is in reality.

The history of Meghalaya is associated with the three major tribes residing here, Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo. These tribes have been living here for ages. According to legend, the Khasi were among the earliest immigrants to the state. All three tribes, Khasi, Jayanti and Garo then settled in different areas of the state.

Around 1765, this region of the northeast, then Assam, was occupied by the British. After Independence, in 1954, the residents of this area raised the demand for a separate state, which the States Reorganization Commission rejected.

In 1960, ‘All Party Hill Leaders’ was formed to get this demand accepted peacefully. Due to this and several other movements, in September 1968, the Government of India gave Meghalaya the status of an autonomous state while living within Assam. Later on 21 January 1972, Meghalaya was formed as a separate state.

Tribes of Meghalaya

Khasi

The Khasi are an ancient tribe living in Meghalaya. A small population of the Khasi tribe also lives in Bangladesh, and the meaning of Khasi is ‘seven huts’. The people of this Meghalayan tribe speak the Khasi language. According to the 2001 census, more than 11 lakh Khasi tribe members lived in Meghalaya.

People of the Khasi tribe cultivate betel leaves, betel nuts, and oranges. They are also skilled in making bamboo and cane products. In many states of India, the Khasi tribals are recognised as a protected Scheduled Tribe. Men of the Khasi tribe wear traditional dresses called the Jaiphong, while women wear Jansen.

Garo

The Garo are a tribe of Meghalaya and adjoining areas of Bangladesh. It is the second-largest tribe of Meghalaya and is predominantly Christian. That said, these tribals also pray by sacrificing animals in front of many gods and goddesses, so one could say that they have a mixed religious belief. This tribe lives in Meghalaya as well as in many northeastern states of India.

According to the 2001 Indian census, their population in Meghalaya was about two lakhs. Their language is Garo, which is similar to Tibetan and Burmese languages. Wangala, Galmekda, Agalamka, and Christmas are among their main festivals.

Hajong

Hajong is a tribal ethnic group and is the fourth majority tribe in Meghalaya. This ethnic group is spread out in Northeast India as well as in Bangladesh. Including both the countries, the estimated population of this tribal group is around 1.5 lakh. Their language is Hajong, which is an East Indo-Aryan language. Pathing and Phulaagon are the traditional clothing of the women of the Hajong ethnic group. Durga Puja, Nontang, Chormaga are their main festivals.

Panar or Jaintia

Panar is a tribe of Meghalaya, but it is also known as Jaintia. The word Jaintia is from an earlier kingdom, the Jaintia Empire, whose rulers belonged to the Sinteng community. In 1835, the Jaintia kingdom was annexed by the British. After Independence, in 1972, the Jaintia Kingdom was established as the Jaintia Hills District. The original tribal religion of Jaintia is known as Nimedre.

Tiwa

The Tiwa tribe is a tribe living in Assam and Meghalaya. The Tiwa is a Scheduled Tribe within the state of Assam. People of this tribe are further divided into two groups, Pahadi Tiwa and Plain Tiwa. Pahari Tiwa people live in the northern corner of the Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya. The second group lives in the plains. According to the 2001 census, they have a total population of about two and a half lakhs.

Kyat

The Nongkrem festival is celebrated in autumn each year, October or November, and it is a five-day celebration. This Khasi tribe festival involves a lot of dancing. Men dance to the beat of drums and tangmuri pipes while holding swords in their right hands. People perform this ‘ka shad mastieh’ dance ritual to make the all-powerful Ka Blei Synshar goddess happy and to get her blessings for a bumper harvest next year

The Nongkrem dance festival is also known as ‘ka pomblang syiem’ or ‘shad nongkrem’ and you can enjoy these festivities at Smit when the festival starts. Smit is the cultural centre of Khasi Hills that helps to boost tourism in the region.

Yes, compared to the prices charged, one can honestly accept that the rooms are not quite up to the 4 and 5-star mark, but they are clean, decent and spacious, overall comfortable accommodations. For your island honeymoon on Agatti Island, they might be slightly rustic in fittings and furnishing. But what cheap hotels such as this one lack in luxury, they make up on value. Considering how beautiful the locale is, with tall coconut trees and a beautiful beach that is literally right where you are, you’ll be hard-pressed to spend more time outdoors anyway.

Interesting Nightlife

If you thought there was no nightlife in Lakshadweep, the nightlife on Agatti Island will surprise you. No, it is not about bars and clubs, but rather about enjoying something even more phenomenal and unique. Visit the beach at night and you might just catch the glowing bioluminescent plankton that hit the headlines so recently. These are glowing bodies of algae and fungi that produce a glow-in-dark chemical. At night, their neon, iridescent glow covers the beach in an ethereal light and feels like you’ve been teleported to another world. Sadly, this can’t be seen all the time, and just like some other natural phenomena, you’ve got to be at the right place at the right time to see it.

With all of the above points making a honeymoon on Agatti Island so attractive for newlyweds, one drawback is worth noting. Alcohol is prohibited on the island and you are not allowed to carry your alcohol there either. Similarly smoking or carrying cigarettes with you is also prohibited. That said, you’re likely to forget this altogether when you are thoroughly mesmerized by this island’s natural beauty.

How to get to Agatti Island

There are flights from Kochi to Agatti Island that take you to the island’s airport in about 1 hour 15 minutes. Air India operates these flights to and from Cochin to Agatti Island and this is the only flight connectivity there is if you wish to fly to Agatti Island for your honeymoon. You can take an auto from Agatti airport to Agatti Island Beach Resort.

You can get to Agatti Island from Bangalore, Goa, Delhi and Mumbai too, but you will first have to fly to Kochi and then fly out to Agatti Island from there. The Kochi to Agatti Island flight operates from Monday to Saturday, on all days except Sunday.

If you are okay to take a ship cruise to Agatti Island rather than flying, that is an experience worth taking too. Ships to Agatti Island ply from Kochi and Beypore (near Kozhikode). Depending on your travel class, you can get one-way tickets on these ships from Rs 2000 per person and the rates can go as high as about Rs 5000 per person (2020 rates).

Whether you are looking for flights to Agatti Island or looking to take a cruise ship, the entry permit formalities need to be noted well in advance. It is always best to take an Agatti Island package from a tour operator or agency or book an Agatti Island honeymoon package deal instead so that from permit to holiday, all end to end services are taken care of by knowledgeable agents.

Agatti Permits

Getting permits to visit Agatti Island is a slightly cumbersome and long-drawn process. Even as an Indian passport holder, you need a police verification certificate to apply for a permit to visit Agatti Island. It takes anywhere between 15 days to 1 month to get the permit and the certificate, so it is best to plan your honeymoon well in advance, by at least a month if not more.

Even when you get the permit, you get it with a 15-day permit validity window. This means that you have to get your honeymoon done within those 15 days!

This is an extra hassle especially if you want to go to Agatti Island by shipping vessel instead of a flight. Ships need to be booked at least 15 days in advance and that makes it practically impossible to get the permit done, travel by ship and then get the honeymoon done within the 15 days. Travelling by vessel is cheaper but due to this hassle, if you wish to travel by ship, it is best to take the services of a travel agent or tour operator.

In addition to the permit, every person visiting Lakshadweep needs to shell out a heritage tax, though it is nominal. Adults need to pay Rs 200 per person and children between 12 to 18 years of age have to pay Rs 100 per person.

A GUHAGAR ROAD TRIP EXPERIENCE: INDIAN ROADTRIPS

This Holi, my group of road trippers (which makes four of us in total), drove down to Guhagar, Ratnagiri. This blog is about our experience of our Guhagar road trip and our eco-friendly resort find in Guhagar, namely Baug Guhagar.

So let me start this blog with a story. The story of why the festival of Holi is celebrated, since it was our Holi trip to Konkan.

The Story of the Asura King, Hiranyakashipu

There was once a king called Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu was an evil Asura king who meditated only to get a boon from Brahma so that he could become invincible and could not be punished by any gods for his ruthless acts.

He had passed an order which said that the citizens of his kingdom could not worship any deity except for him. He was to be worshipped as god and he would execute anyone who did not follow this command. The twist in this tale is that his own son, Prahalad denied accepting him as god and kept being a loyal bhakta to Lord Vishnu.

The ego of Hiranyakashipu was hurt to an extent where he made numerous attempts to kill his own son but failed miserably.

‘Jaako rakhe Saiya, maar sakhe na koi’.

This means that no one or nothing can harm you when god is the one who is taking care of you.

Story of Holi (Holika) Dahan

The conniving king, now in utter misery, remembered that his sister, Holika had a boon that she could not be burnt alive and so he asked Holika to sit in a firepit with Prahalad. The idea was that his sister would be unharmed whereas the son would be burnt to ashes but to his surprise, the opposite happened. Prahalad was unharmed and Holika was burnt alive!

The furious king meditated and called on the gods to get answers. The gods told him that the boon that Holika could not be burnt alive was only if she was alone but this time around, she was with Prahalad.

‘So why wasn’t Prahalad burnt with her?’ screamed the king. To this the gods replied that Prahalad was in deep meditation with Lord Vishnu himself and was hence protected by the almighty.

King understood that he had been outplayed by the gods and went on to devise more evil ways to kill his son.

This day when Lord Vishnu saved Prahalad and killed Holika is celebrated as Holi. The burning of the pyre is a symbolism of the evil being burnt and the good being saved by the gods.

Holi was on the 29th of March 2021 this year, which was a Monday. I was looking at a long weekend and I was certainly not going to sit at home and get bored. While browsing Instagram I came across a sponsored post of ‘Baug Guhagar’ and this place did look quite interesting.

Since I am located in Mumbai, I had to check it out on Google Maps. It was quite a realization to know that Baug Guhagar was a good 8-hour drive! It would thus be insane if I had to return on Monday and then resume work on Tuesday since the drive would be so exhausting.

I put this topic up for discussion with my travel buddies and we decided that we would all take a holiday on Friday and leave early in the morning. We would then return on Sunday and that would allow us to have our Monday as a rest day. Everything seemed to fall into its place thereafter. We made our booking and started a countdown to the D day, 26th of March 2021.

The Road Trip Begins

It was 5AM on Friday, the 26th of March 2021. All of us met on the highway near Mumbai’s domestic airport. I was meeting Christy Joseph for the first time, but I was happy to see another bald guy in the gang. I have been travelling with Mamta and Pooja since a while now, but this was my first trip with Christy.

We adjusted the luggage which was a challenge because my car does not have a boot. I drive a 2012 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Green. Green is a model with factory fit CNG system which means the there is no usable space left in the car. My CNG system made it possible to drive to and from Guhagar at a fuel cost of less than INR2000. This cost was further divided into 4 parts and we only had to pay INR500 each towards fuel. I am sure that a train journey by Konkan Railway would have cost us more than that.

We took a quick snack break as soon as we crossed Kalamboli, Panvel. We all carry food and water during trips as it keeps us safe not only from COVID, but also from other food borne troubles; and saves a lot of money as well.

So, Google said that the journey was going to be about 7 hours, but we soon realized that it lied to us. We reached Baug Guhagar well after 3:30 in the afternoon and this means that we drove for a good 10 hours! What happened was that a bridge on the route that Google suggested was under repairs and that made us to take a ferry. This short journey took us around 30 mins which would have been 3 minutes if the bridge had been fine. And then it took another 10 minutes to get back to the main road once we were out of the ferry.

The road on this route was twisty and curvy and goes through. This further increases travel time, not to mention that the roads were pretty awful too.

Baug Guhagar: The Eco-Friendly Hotel

I came across a sponsored post of this place on Instagram and it looked quite tempting. I did not waste a minute in forwarding it in my WhatsApp group. I received an almost instant reply from Pooja and Mamta followed close. Mamta also invited a friend, Christy Joseph to join us and he agreed as well.

Baug Guhagar is one of those rare places that actually practices the concept of women empowerment. The women here are from the local village and it was a task for an NGO worker to convince their families that it was okay for the women of their families to work.

To top this initiative, the resort is eco-friendly too!

There is no air conditioning and there are a few rules and regulations to be followed. The rate per night, per person is around 800INR and it does not include any meals, so the total expense comes to about 1300INR per person, per night, with them. I feel that it is overpriced, yet I would say that it is an experience of its own kind.

Guhagar beach is a 5-minute drive, and a back-water lake is around 5-minute walking from here.

Guhagar: The Town

Words cannoyt clearly explain the beauty of this town, so I’ll use photos.

Guhagar is all about temples and beaches and lakes. Most of the residents are engaged in farming and fishing and they are doing quite okay. The literacy rate is over 86% which is amazing. The total population is 3024 people. I know it sounds like too few, but this is true.

Government has established a Municipal Corporation, but the panchayat head is still considered as the local leader by the villagers. My knowledge is that the panchayat is quite respected and consists of good people, unlike what we see in the movies. Everyone knows everyone here and the crime is next to zero.

Guhagar’s Infrastructure Broke my Heart

We have always seen such schools in the movies. While modern movies have stopped showing such schools, but the harsh reality is, that these exist in the villages. While our children in the cities have good educational facilities, children of the country are walking miles and attending schools like this one.

I could not capture much as exams were going on and I did not want to distract the staff nor the students!

It is impressive to note that despite the dilapidated state of infrastructure at such schools, the town has a literacy rate of over 86 percent!

Holi Celebrations in Guhagar

Legend says that an Asura by the name of Panchjanya kidnapped the son of Sandipani, locked him in a conch (shankh) and buried it deep in the sea. Sandipani was the guru of Lord Krishna. When the lord himself offered to pay guru dakshina, his guru asked for his kidnapped son to be returned.

Lord Krishna fought and tamed the Asura and freed the son of his guru. This shankh was now a possession of the Lord who named it Panchjanya from the demon and the demon was now known as Shankhasur from the Shankh.

It is said that Lord Krishna blew the Panchjanya to initiate the war of Mahabharat and that Shankhasur fought together with Arjuna and Bheema as well.The villagers dress up as the Asura and dance to collect some donations. These donations are then used for the betterment of the village and not a single penny is used by any single person for private gain.

Shankhasur of Guhagar collected INR 35000, quite a feat when the town’s total population itself is just 3023!

Manali to Leh- 478KM

The list of best road trip routes in India will always feature the Manali to Leh route. Cruising along snowy paths with breath-taking views all along surpasses every traveller’s expectations.

The route with a total of about 478 km takes 2 to 3 days to complete. As the road lies at high altitudes and in a region of extensive snowfall, it is open only for about 5 to 6 months every year, from May up to November. Travellers must check route status before planning a trip.This magnificent route passes through the Rohtang pass and one needs a permit to cross this pass. Registering yourself at the Kokhsar check post is also necessary. You can schedule an overnight break-in Keylong.

Bangalore to Bandipur – 218.6KM

If high altitudes, cold weather and snow is not your thing, a trip through lush green forests with amazing wildlife, can certainly be a charming choice.

Established in 1941, the Bandipore National Park in 1973, included additional areas of the adjacent forests and became the Bandipore Tiger Reserve under the Project Tiger. Known as Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Bandipore in Karnataka, the roads that pass through this park, taking travellers from Bangalore to Ooty or Mysore are a wildlife lover’s delight.

The route has specific operating hours. One also has to follow the speed limit within the park premises. But good roads and the animals that watch you lazily from the roadside, make it worth the trip. Although spotting a tiger can be rare, you can easily see deer and elephants here. You will need 5-6 hours to complete this route.

Guwahati to Tawang – 520KM

It is no exaggeration when they say that the North East is a land of immense beauty, picturesque landscapes and amazing culture. The destination Tawang, is famous for its 400-year-old monastery which is one of the oldest in India and attracts many tourists every year.

The route from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh takes you over some extreme yet enchanting terrain. The 520 km distance will require about 2 days to cover.

Mumbai to Goa – 550KM

For years, this route has been the favourite of car and bike enthusiasts. Although some may call it a cliché, it is no doubt so for a reason. The smooth and scenic four-lane road along the Western Ghats is perfect for those who want to feel the wind in their hair. For others who prefer taking it slower, an alternative route to the same destination provides generous views of rice fields and coconut plantations.

The journey from Mumbai to Goa takes about 10 to 11 hours without a break, but if you wish to halt, Kolhapur is a good option.

Chennai to Pondicherry – 150KM

The beauty of riding along the sea on a bike or in a car with the sun glinting off the water is an experience that cannot really be described in words. The journey from Chennai to Pondicherry is not very long (takes about 3 hours) but the wide-open roads and beautiful weather make it totally worthwhile.

The East Coast Road that you will have to take passes through Mahabalipuram which is a UNESCO world heritage site, and one that recently gained popularity due to a high-level meet between two heads of state held here.

Lonavala, a popular hill station near Pune, is known for its lush green mountains and valleys, especially during the monsoons. Located at an altitude of 2047 feet above sea level, the lovely little mountain hamlet is well known for its caves, waterfalls and fortresses from the Maratha era. Lonavala’s proximity to both Pune and Mumbai helps it in retaining its popularity as a top tourist destination in India. But what makes it a must-visit destination for all are the variety of things to do here. Of course, there are theme parks, wax museums and more, but the pull of Lonavala’s tranquil lakes and gorgeous views from atop fortresses such as Lohagad Fort and Tikona Fort is far bigger.

A hot air balloon safari in Lonavala takes you on an adventure to view the majestic Sahyadri mountains, its forts, misty lakes, caves, waterfalls and forests from an aerial vantage point. Flying high above the mountains you can view greenery that takes your breath away during sunrise or sunset. Getting an aerial hawk-eye view of Lonavala’s forts, such as the Tikona Fort, is truly an unparalleled experience.

The hot air balloon rides last approximately an hour and takes you to a height of about 1200 feet above land. Anywhere between 4 to 8 people are aboard each air balloon, giving you adequate space to enjoy the unhindered views. Flights are times twice during the day, usually 2 hours before sunrise and 2 hours before sunset. This allows the flight to take optimal height for the best views before the sun rises or sets.

Though customized packages are available, most general hot air ballooning packages offer hotel pick up and light snacks. Ballooning activities usually don’t operate during the monsoon. Lonavala is a lovely hill station when viewed on the ground, but it is uncommonly beautiful when viewed from up above.

Hot Air Balloon Safari Package Prices

Hot Air Balloon rides in Lonavala are usually offered as part of packages and package prices during the week are lower than the prices on weekends. Adult tickets are anywhere between INR 8,400 to INR 10,000 per person excluding an 18% GST. Kids under 5 are not allowed on these rides. Child tickets are between INR 5,700 and INR 6,500. There are no extra fees for foreign nationals. Rides are generally open on public holidays as well.

Other Information

Flights are fully insured and pilots are licensed as well as experienced. Still, hot air ballooning can be scary for most people, so do be mentally prepared before you fly. Try to get there early if you are getting there by yourself. Inflating the hot air balloons is quite a process and you shouldn’t miss watching this captivating process. Safe hot air ballooning requires cooperative weather. So if the weather is bad, be prepared for your ride to be cancelled or rescheduled.
