And why shouldn’t it be? Seoul is the perfect blend of tradition and modernity for anyone who wants to experience the very essence of Korea and Korean culture without giving up on the luxury and convenience of modernity.

So if you’re planning to visit Seoul or explore South Korea on a vacation (which I dare say, you really must), they say a Discover Seoul Pass is a convenient and budget-friendly trip essential. Is that true, let’s have a look. But before that – this is a long blog that answers all you questions on Discover Seoul Passes and how to use them to save money on Seoul sightseeing. What is a Discover Seoul Pass?

The Discover Seoul Pass is a combined initiative of the Seoul Tourism Organization and Seoul Metropolitan Government to make Seoul’s top attractions and commutes more convenient and affordable for tourists.

It is a pass that allows you free access to some of the best attractions in Seoul and one-time one-way use of the AREX, a 43-minute non-stop premium train from the airport to downtown Seoul Station (or vice versa). It also gives you access to a Seoul Bike voucher, that can be used at any time during your pass duration, but just once.

In other words, with over 50+ city attractions falling within its reach, the Discover Seoul Pass, it appears to be a one-stop-shop that provides some free admissions and some discounted admissions to the most popular cultural, historical and experiential attractions in Seoul.

At first glance, it certainly appears to be the one thing you need when you visit Seoul.

But as great as that sounds, and as cost-saving, as that sounds, that is not necessarily true if you do not plan your itinerary well.

For starters, to make the cost of the passes worthwhile and to make maximum savings through them, planning your attractions plays the biggest part.

Two main issues crop up:

That you can hardly cover a good number of Seoul’s best attractions in a 24-hour, 48-hour or 72-hour Discover Seoul Pass (and of course, the fewer attractions you cover, the higher the effective expansiveness of the pass in terms of actual value).

Distances between attractions and the time required to explore an attraction to the fullest make it nearly impossible to squeeze out the pass’s full value if you go without proper planning; and

Several attractions covered under the pass actually have low entry fees (and some, none at all). And as a first-time visitor to Seoul, you’ll possibly not know that. So if you pick these attractions over the more expensive ones, the cost of the pass does not actually get recouped and you make a tacit loss.

But there are advantages and disadvantages of the Discover Seoul Pass and we will get to them later. Later on, we also talk about how you can squeeze the most juice out of your 24-hour or 48-hour Discover Seoul (DS) Pass. But later.

Why Do You Need a Discover Seoul Pass When you Visit Seoul?

They say that the DS Pass is a boon for people who visit Seoul because it saves time and money, just like other Seoul tour cards available out there. Since the pass offers free access to several top Seoul attractions (and discounted access to others), it helps you save money. And that is certainly true to an extent.

The attractions covered under the pass range from palaces and museums to activities, performances, cultural exhibition and even shopping streets and malls.

Besides, the DS Pass doubles up as a bus pass, better known as a T-money transportation card. Of course, this will need to be topped up with money before you can use it on subways or buses. Nevertheless, it makes life as a tourist in Seoul far more convenient for sure.

And with 24-hour, 48-hour and 72-hour passes to choose from, all you really need to make the Discover Seoul Passes real value-for-money is to make a good sightseeing schedule. Once again, we will get to that in a bit, but first, let’s look at how does one use the Discover Seoul Pass and what are the usage rules (especially those in fine print).

Many people have a lot of questions about the Discover Seoul Passes, least of them being, are the passes worth it, will they help me save money, so on and so forth. Let’s look at the some of these:

Where to Buy Discover Seoul Passes?

DS Passes can be bought both online and offline. You can buy the Seoul sightseeing passes online from the company’s smartphone app or from online official affiliate partners.

Passes that are bought online can be picked up at a variety of official designated locations, thus checking the convenience box. Payment can be made via credit card, PayPal or Alipay.

Though mobile passes can be used immediately from your phone and pick up is not really necessary, it is certainly recommended for (1) you can keep your DS Pass card as a souvenir and (2) a physical pass is needed if you intend to use your Seoul sightseeing pass as a Tmoney bus and subway pass for the commute through the city.

Offline, you can buy the Discover Seoul Pass from designated outlets, for example at the airport, or from the physical outlets of designated affiliates.

What are Discover Seoul Passes Prices?

It is February 2021, and the Discover Seoul Pass prices are as given below:

The 24hours Discover Seoul Pass costs KRW 39,900, approximately 35.5 USD (at the current rate where 1 USD is 1122 Korean Won).

To avoid the need to rush from one attraction to another, it’s recommended to opt for a 48-hour or 72-hour pass. This choice provides ample time to explore without the pressure of a tightly packed schedule.

Using a 24-hour pass requires meticulous planning to maximize the number of attractions visited, which can lead to a hurried experience. In contrast, longer passes allow for a more leisurely visit to attractions.

How to Use Discover Seoul Passes?

The DS Pass is available as a card pass as well as a mobile pass, and it is important to register your pass on the Discover Seoul Pass phone app (available on both Android and Apple).

Main Differences Between the Paper Pass and Electronic Pass

The primary distinction lies in convenience and accessibility. The mobile pass can be purchased instantly online, whereas the printed pass requires pickup from specific tourism centers or stores, usually at the airport. This makes the mobile option far more accessible for immediate use.

Product Differences

In terms of features, there are some notable differences:

The K Limousine and e-sim products are available only with the mobile pass.
The Seoul Transportation card is included with the paper pass but not with the mobile pass.

You only get the Seoul Bike voucher and the AREX voucher once you register your pass on the app. Don’t worry, you do not activate the pass when you use public transport or one or both of those two vouchers. The pass countdown starts on the first usage, once it has been used at any of the free attractions.

If you intend to use your pass as a Tmoney transportation card, be sure to keep your physical pass safe. Only the physical pass can be used for tapping on the automatic card readers on buses and subways.

Oh, and did I forget to mention, even if your sightseeing pass is only for 24, 48, or 72 hours, it can be used as a Tmoney bus pass for as long as you want (by topping it with money like a T-money card), as it has no expiry.

This comprehensive understanding of both the paper and electronic pass options will help you choose the one that best fits your travel needs.

The way to use your DS Pass is to present it at the ticket counter of your first chosen tourist attraction in Seoul. Upon presentation, you will receive an admission ticket and your pass will get automatically activated. The pass will then expire after it’s designated duration of 24, 48 or 72 hours. This is of course for the attractions where the pass gives free entry.

For other city attractions, where the pass gives discounted entry, the pass has no expiry. In other words, you can present the pass at any time even after it’s expiry to avail discount benefits at its list of discounted attractions.

What Should You Note When you Visit Seoul with a Discover Seoul Pass?

As is the case with most such products, there are certain fine print rules with Discover Seoul Passes that I personally find a bit (and unnecessarily so) restrictive. For example:

You can visit any Seoul attraction only once during the pas duration.

You get only one one-way trip on the AREX either from the airport to Seoul city centre or from Seoul Station to the airport.

Even if you have a Discover Seoul Pass, you still encounter long queues at ticketing booths since you still have to queue up and get an admission ticket for the attraction of your choice. Some attractions do have separate queues for pass holders, but at most of Seoul’s top attractions, you queue up generically and spend long hours in the ticketing queues itself.

Even if you have the smartphone app, you still need to carry the physical Seoul pass if you wish to use it for general transport on subways, taxis and buses using Tmoney.

Unlike other city sightseeing passes around the world, the Discover Seoul Pass does not include transportation or commute during the time frame of your pass. In other words, you will still have to shell out some money for local transport. And just to give you an idea of how much that could add up, the base fare for a one-time subway trip in Seoul is about 1,250 KRW (approximately 1.1 USD).

These Seoul Passes come in just one set of prices. There are no reduced prices for kids or the elderly.

On the other hand, there’s one good thing about using the Discover Seoul physical passes as commute cards after loading them with Tmoney is that when you are done with your Seoul visit, you can get refunds on the money still on the card.

Are Discover Seoul Passes Worthwhile?

In my personal opinion, not if you go on unplanned. And totally so if you go in with some basic planning.

Let me give you some examples of where having a Discover Seoul Pass does not work out as the brightest, smartest, most cost-prudent idea:

From time to time Seoul as a city offers free entry to royal palaces and art museums, for example, they had made such an announcement in 2019 during the Chuseok holiday in September. Some art galleries and museums also offer free entry to tourists on the last Wednesday of each month. And then, some remarkable museums (that you would never think are free to enter) actually have free entry on all days.

Tourists, especially first-time visitors to South Korea are generally unaware of this. Buying a pass for 40 odd dollars to see things that may be free to see anyway, makes completely no sense. And the Discover Seoul website does not actually tell you how much the entry price to each attraction is if you were to not buy Discover Seoul passes.

Secondly, Seoul’s best attractions are scattered throughout the city. By going in without a plan, you may end up just visiting two good attractions in a day (and spending most of it in the commute), simply because you failed to plan properly.

So for sure, if you plan your trips properly and maximize your benefits, these Seoul sightseeing passes are amazing, especially for first-time visitors to Seoul. But to do that, you need to know exactly which 30 odd attractions that are covered under the pass and visiting which Seoul attractions would maximize your benefits of getting Discover Seoul passes.

Free Lotte World Entry with Discover Seoul Pass

Lotte World is South Korea’s most famous theme park that in itself has over 50 attractions.

To enjoy the park to the fullest and catch the festivals, performances and more that happen there, you should aim to spend an entire day here.

In other words, if you take a 72-hour Discover Seoul pass that costs KRW 70,000 (slightly over 60USD), spending one of those 3 days at Lotte World definitely makes it worthwhile.

Outside of the Seoul pass, a single adult entry to Lotte World costs about KRW 36,000 (approximately 32 USD).

02b.

Free ELAND Cruise Entry with Discover Seoul Pass

ELAND Cruise is a Han river cruise of between 40 to 70 minutes that gives memorable day and night river view experiences for Seoul tourists. The night cruise is the most recommended as you can enjoy things like moonlit dinners, rainbow fountain shows and delightfully lit Seoul attractions and important buildings.

The Discover Seoul Pass lets you pick your free entry for either the Story Cruise, Music Cruise or Moonlight Cruise. Each has its own charm and what you pick depends entirely on your taste.

Without the Seoul visitor pass, this cruise costs anywhere between 18,000 to 20,000 won, let’s say about 18USD. So if you have better things to fill up your itinerary, you can book this cruise independently outside of your pass duration without wrecking your Seoul trip budget.

Free Entry at Korean Museum of Straw & Life

With the city sightseeing pass, you can visit the Korean Museum of Straw & Life with an adult ticket that costs KRW 5000, but with the pass, entry is free.

This is a private museum that showcases Korean’s best handicrafts especially traditional crafts that made use of straw. It has several exhibits and you gain entry to all with your pass.

Not only do you get a glimpse of a traditional Korean house or hanok here, but you also walk out with a free gift! Despite that though, considering the museum’s inexpensive tickets, you should visit this Korean museum outside of your pass duration.

This way, you can use your pass to access the more expensive of major attractions in Seoul.

Free Entry at Changgyeonggung Palace

If you do not have the city pass, you can visit Changgyeonggung Palace with an adult ticket that costs about KRW 1000 per person. With a pass, of course, you get free entry to this major tourist attraction in Seoul. The Changgyeongung Palace is a royal palace from the Joseon era that has lived through a lot of history since.

The palace is indeed worth a visit when you visit Seoul, but to get the maximum value out of your Discover passes, you need to either club it with another high ticket attraction.

That’s especially so since there is also a combination ticket that allows you to visit the 4 palaces of Changdeokgung, Changgyeongung, Deoksugung and Gyeongbokgung and 1 shrine (Jongmyo shrine) for KRW 10,000 per adult.

Free Entry at Gyeongbokgung Palace

Without the Discover Seoul pass (and without any combination ticket), admission to Gyeongbokgung Palace costs about KRW 3,000 per adult.

This palace is an absolute must-visit for all Seoul visitors, not just for the palace and its traditional architecture but also for things like ‘change of guard’ ceremonies that take place in front of the Gwanghwamun main gate at 10AM and 2PM on all days except Tuesdays.

Since other attractions such as the Bukchon Village are nearby, you can also club this top Seoul attraction with others and make the most out of your trip.

06f.

Free Entry at Changdeokgung Palace

Without your pass, an entry into the Changdeokgung Palace would cost you about KRW 3000 per adult. It is a free entry for you if you carry a pass.

You can explore the beautiful palace and its surrounding ‘secret’ gardens with a self-guided tour but taking a guided tour will give you deeper insight into the palace’s history.

It is important to note that your pass gives you free entry just to this stunning Joseon era palace and not to the secret gardens tour.

Hence, unless you are clubbing a visit to this palace with other major attractions with expensive ticket prices, it is not worth using your pass tine to explore this Seoul palace.

If you watch Korean dramas, you’re possibly already aware of Seoul Tower on the top of Namsan mountain as a romantic tower that’s super lucky for proposals! As a tourist in Seoul, you may not be interested in the luck, nor the romance, but the 360-degree views of the city are sure to be a draw.

Minus the Discover passes, visiting Seoul tower will have you shelling out approximately KRW 16,000 per adult ticket. Since it is on the expensive side, getting this attraction done under the free entry duration of your Discover pass will give you the best value for money.

It is worth noting that is you go for any additional experiences (for example those offered by the Namsan Seoul Tower Hanbok Culture Experience Center), you will have to pay extra for them, as these extras are not part of Discover Seoul Pass Benefits.

Free Entry at the National Museum of Korea

Now here’s the deal that most foreigners may not know. Entry into the National Museum of Korea is free. But the Discover Seoul Pass also lists it as an attraction with free entry to pass holders. So it is slightly misleading to tourists who consider this to be a perk of the pass. That said though, free entry is limited to permanent exhibits only and certain sections such as the Children’s Museum do require a ticket. And your Seoul sightseeing pass gets you free entry to those and even any special exhibits that the museum may be running when you are there.

Is it worth it to visit the National Museum on your visit Seoul pass? Personally, I don’t think so (and I am not particularly fond of museums). I’d rather see it for free (minus the special exhibits) outside of my pass purview and take my time exploring the exhibits.

Free Entry at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

The National Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art normally charges KRW400 per adult ticket, but if you have a pass, you can visit it for free.

Located on the cultural street of Samcheong-ro, this museum is definitely worth a visit since it gives you insight into the evolution of art, entertainment, performances and even movies.

Whether you choose to do it within your Discover pass purview or not depends on what you club with this experience, like a Seoul cultural tour for example, if you are looking to squeeze the most value out of your passes.

Free Entry at Namsangol Hanok Village

Even without a Discover Seoul Pass entry to Namsangol Hanok Village is free, but there may be charges for any additional activities and experiences there.

That said, the Namsangol Hanok Village is a major attraction in Seoul and should not be missed by anyone. If you plan on hiking up to Namsan Tower, this is a good place to start the hike.

Seoul Since this attraction is free anyway, it works to do it outside of your Discovery Seoul Pass time unless you are clubbing it with other more expensive attractions. You can easily spend over 2 hours at this delightful place and hence you should also factor in for the fact that exploring this place is quite time-intensive.

Free Entry at Yellow Balloon City Bus

Without the pass, the Yellow Balloon City Bus, a double-decker Seoul city tour bus costs between KRW 12,000 to KRW 15,000. These buses like the shuttle tours to DMZ often go through central Seoul and take you to almost all major royal palaces and traditional markets.

Since these are hop-on-hop-off style buses, they are both convenient and cost-effective.

Taking the traditional culture course of 1 hour and 50 minutes is worth it on your free access pass. It starts at Dongdaemun Design Plaza, where you can get your wrist band and then take your time hopping on and hopping off as you wish.

General admission at the Deoksugung Palace costs about KRW 1,000 per adult, though your pass gives you free access. If you love history and traditional Korean-style wooden buildings, this palace offers you many delights. But though the palace is worth visiting, its low entry fees mean that you can do it at cost, even without your Discover passes.

Seoul’s Runningman Themed Activity Center offers a treasure hunt as part of the city’s indoor attractions.

Adult tickets cost slightly over 13USD, a bit on the steep side.

If you are an avid follower of the Runningman television show (Korean), you’ll love this attraction that takes you on a treasure hunt across the city (trying to solve puzzles and missions). The experience has great reviews online, especially from tourists.

If this sort of entertainment delights you, this attraction is worth covering under your Seoul pass.

Adult tickets to Alive Museum cost about 9USD per adult if you do not have the passes that give you free entry to this attraction. Alive Museum is a unique experience that gives a brilliant and fun interactive art experience on the concept of being ‘alive’.

If you love art, you’ll love this museum and its innovative arts, using optical illusions, digital media and more.

Unless you are an art-loving tourist in Seoul, you can give this museum a pass when you are under your Discover Seoul Pass duration. Since the tickets are relatively expensive, if you do wish to check this museum out, it is best done under the pass’s purview.

Tickets to the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art Houses cost about KRW 10,000 per adult. Since this is pretty steep and this attraction is unmissable, you can and should cover it under your free entry pass.

The Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art Houses showcase the architectural heritage of Korea. It also showcases the work of world-famous architects such as Jean Nouvel, Mario Botta and Rem Koolhaas, to name a few.

This attraction gets really high reviews on most traveller review sites and you should definitely avoid missing it, with or without the Discover Seoul free entry pass.

Free Entry at Seodaemun Prison

Seodaemun Prison, originally named Gyeongseong Prison, was first opened by Japan in 1908.

This prison housed Korea’s top freedom-fighters, who played their parts in getting Korea liberated in 1945.

In 1998, the prison was opened to tourists and locals to celebrate the spirit of independence and to educate them on Korea’s freedom struggles.

Entry to the Seodaemun Prison History Hall costs approximately KRW 3,000 if you do not have the passes that give you free entry.

Free Entry at Seolleung and Jeongneung Royal Tombs

Visiting the Seolleung and Jeongneung Royal Tombs is definitely one of the top things to do in Seoul. But since the entry fees are just KRW 1,000 per adult and because the tombs are open till 9PM, you should do one of two things.

1. Leave the tombs as a place to visit after you have worked through your Discover Seol pass duration, or 2. Cover these under the pass but later in the evenings when other major attractions are no longer open.

These tombs of kings and queens from the Joseon era were listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2009. They are centrally located in the town of Gangnam.

Free Entry at Yeonghwiwon Royal Tomb

The Yeonghwiwon and Sunginwon are tombs of princes and royal consorts in a royal burial ground meant for royals from the Joseon era.

The royal tomb obviously has historical significance but what draws tourists here are the green, peaceful surroundings.

The ticket price to see these tombs is just KRW 1,000 and hence it may not be the most effective use of your passes to cover these tombs under their purview, especially since strolling these gardens is also time-consuming and may eat up a lot of time off your DS pass.

Free Entry at Jongmyo Royal Shrine

Entry fees at Jongmyo Royal Shrine are KWR 1,000 unless you go for the Discover Seoul Pass (which offers free entry) or the combination ticket for KRW 10,000 (that gives you entry to 4 palaces and this one shrine). Standalone, visiting this shrine on your pass is not a value-for-money proposition.

Jongmyo has enshrined the entire lineage of Joseon era kings and queens. You can club this shrine with other attractions on your DS (Discover Seoul) pass to get the best value for money.

The shrine and its surrounds are both really beautiful and worth a visit on days when it is not crowded.

COEX Aquarium is a family-friend attraction in Seoul that houses over 400,000 sea creatures, housed in 16 themed discovery zones.

Entry fees with the DS pass are 0, but without the pass are KWR 21,900 per adult and KWR 19,900 per child. The prices are indeed steep but the attraction really is that good too.

If you are travelling to Seoul with your family or are looking for something fun for the kids, choose to do this for free on your Discover Seoul pass. Pass holders also get a 10 per cent discount on items bought at the aquarium’s shop.

Free Entry at Seoul City Tour Bus (Red Bus)

Your city sightseeing passes give you one free day aboard the Seoul City Tour buses, provided you choose one of 4 courses. Also known as Seoul Tiger Buses, these are hop-on-hop-off buses that take you through the city and give you audio guided tours (available in 12 languages) with an English tourist map.

8. Since the pass activates upon first use, you should also work out whether you need to use your AREX voucher immediately upon landing at the airport or if you could use it at the end of your trip, to get back. You only get a one-way voucher and you need to pay for the second trip.

Using the Discover Seoul Pass was an incredibly straightforward and money-saving adventure. We opted for the 24-hour pass, available for purchase online, which provided the flexibility we needed for a day of exploration.

After buying the pass, downloading the Discover Seoul app was a breeze. The QR code essential for entry into attractions appeared right after login, making it easy to manage.

Choosing the Right Duration

The pass comes in 24, 48, or 72-hour options. While the 72-hour pass offers the best value for a longer stay, we found the 24-hour pass suitable for visiting our top attractions. It’s possible to explore five or six spots within a day if you plan efficiently. However, for a more relaxed experience, the longer duration passes are more practical.

Attractions Explored

With our pass, we visited five key attractions, starting with a tranquil Eland River Cruise. This included an audio-guided journey along the Han River, with options for both day and music-filled evening cruises.

Drinking Culture

I mean even if you drink here in India, it is hardly that easy. Hell, I still have trouble drinking with my dad. I would rather sneak out with my sister and have a shot here and there, than have some fun as a family. Not so in Korea, not so in Seoul.

The first things you notice in Seoul is the drinking culture. The young and old drink together, and while there are certain etiquettes attached to it, drinking every evening is also not considered a taboo. Hallelujah, we have found that promised land!

Very rarely will food shock you, unless you are a strict vegetarian/vegan who’s never been around (or you’re a Jain where even garlic and onion might shock you at times). Although this one is not a part of the 11 lakes of Yateley complex, the Watmore Farm is a family-run fishery, providing anglers beautiful and clean waters, good quality fish and serene surroundings. This 5-acre lake is located close to Hampshire and has been open for more than 14 years now. The peculiarity of this lake is the depth, which is anywhere between 2 ft and 19 ft. The stable water temperature, because of this depth ensures constant fish feeding. Common fish found here are Mirror Carp, Perch, Tench and Roach.

Tickets (1 or 2 rods) cost about £8 to £12. The lake has a total of 45 swims and you can also book in advance for matches. The schedule of events is available on this website.

UNDERGROUND FUN AT SALINA TURDA

We have all probably visited many theme parks in different regions of the world and thoroughly enjoyed a day out in the sun and cool breeze. But the underground Salina Turda in Romania offers you a fun amusement park experience you will never forget- 120 metres under the ground!

A subterranean amusement park is a concept difficult to grasp, let alone build. But Salina Turda is a stunning masterpiece of human labour, skilled engineering and unbelievable creativity. Originally a salt mine from Antiquity till the end of excavations in 1932, Salina Turda has served as a bomb shelter during World War II and a cheese storage facility before being opened to the public in 1992 as an incredible submerged wonderland.

Turda is the second-largest city in the Cluj County of Northwest Romania. The salt mine is located in the Durgău- Valea Sărată area of Turda. The 2000-year-old salt mine is now a popular tourist destination owing to its historical significance combined with modern attractions at a never-before-seen location.

Since the 17th century, Salina Turda saw extensive mining and excavation for salt. The mining work expanded during Rome’s occupation of Dacia. An interesting fact about this humongous mine is that no explosions were usedto create it. The entire excavation was undertaken by hand using free people who were paid in kind (wine, ox, loaves of bread).

Present Use

Every well, gallery, passageway and shaft of the Salina Turda has been turned into a surreal marvel today. The mine was opened to tourists in the year 1992. Under an infrastructure renovation project, Salina received an overhaul in 2008 and was reopened for the public in 2010.

In 2013, Salina Turda was ranked as a part of Business Insider’s list of “25 hidden gems around the world that are worth a trek”. More than 6 lakh (6 hundred thousand) tourists visited the mine in 2017.

The mine has been used as a Halotherapy centre since its opening. The conditions inside the mine are therapeutic and help people with lung problems get some relief. The constant air temperature, relative humidity level, ionized air and almost negligible levels of allergens and radioactivity make this a beneficial microclimate promoting better respiratory functions amongst people.

One would imagine that an underground park like this one can probably have just a few entertainment activities, but enter this incredible underground marvel and you’ll be truly stunned.

From a Ferris wheel to mini golf, ping pong courts to bowling alleys and an amphitheatre to paddle boats- there is way more down here than you could have ever thought.

Keeping children and adults entertained for a longer time and making them breathe in the clean, healthy mine air was an important objective of this place. The various leisure activities set up below thus serve more than one purpose.

The Franz Josef Gallery; the Josef mine, also known as the Echoes Room; the Rudolf mine, the bell-shaped Theresa mine (90 metres high), the Little Venice boat tour, the Crivac room and the Extraction Shaft room are parts of the mine that you must explore during your visit.

Salina Turda is open for tourists every day of the week from 9 AM to 5 PM with the last entry permitted at 4 PM. Entry ticket costs are different for children, adults, senior citizens and specially-abled persons but the general cost for an adult would be 40 lei (Romanian currency), which is about USD 9. Children below 3 years of age get free entry.

The ticket only covers entry charges and visitors have to pay separately for parking and to use the different leisure activities underground, like boating, bowling, mini-golf, pool tables or rowboats.

This colossal subterranean cavern is a geological wonder with shiny walls, stalactites and other salt formations. But do keep in mind that as you go deeper into the ground, it gets colder. So, dress warmly.

Large and organised groups can benefit from Guide services, tours and free entry vouchers subject to certain conditions. Free audio guides are also available for download in English, Romanian and Hungarian.

Be patient, for there will be long lines for the elevator. If you are game, you can take the long flight of stairs as well.

I’ll be honest. ‘Memories of Alhambra’ brought me here. You know that famous KDrama with a fantastic twisty-turn-y storyline and the absolutely gorgeous backdrop of Granada in Spain. Yup, that’s the one. Of course, you could be a bibliophile who wants to be here thanks to Washington Irving’s ‘Tales of Alhambra’. And that’s good enough too.

But now that I have researched a place so hauntingly beautiful, I just can’t get her off my mind. And hence I’ve pencilled in the bullet point that reads ‘visit Alhambra Palace‘, on my newly updated bucket list. Join me in admiring this beauty; you probably won’t be able to resist anyway as you read further.

Top 6 Reasons to Visit Alhambra

Alhambra is truly a spectacular palace-cum-fortress with the stunning natural backdrop of the majestic Sierra Nevada peaks. No matter where you view her from, the palace offers impressive views of Andalusia’s beautiful countryside. The views here are so jaw-droppingly gorgeous, that Alhambra has consistently maintained the honour of being the most-visited monument in Spain.

You will need to purchase the separate night visit tickets to visit Alhambra during the night but it is totally worth it for a phenomenal, out-of-this-world experience. When darkness falls and the lights come on, Alhambra is a vision unlike another. The beautiful palaces and gardens take on an ethereal Disney palace-like look and feel that truly casts a spell.

Ancient History of Alhambra

If you are not from Spain or if you haven’t ever toured Spain, you probably don’t know much about the history of Alhambra Palace. Which is a shame, because it is so spectacularly interesting. Alhambra is located at a strategic vantage point on Sabika Hill and is surrounded by defensive walls, making her an almost impregnable fortress of her times. Spread over almost 26 acres of land, Alhambra also gives you quite the workout if you intend to see all 30 of her towers and the multitude of smaller monuments within her walls.

The Moorish palace-cum-fortress of Alhambra is the standing testimony of Islamic rule in Spain. She was built by the last remaining Nasrid Emirs in 889 (yeah, not 1889, but the EIGHTH century!), which history tells us to be the Islamic Golden Age in Europe. Today, along with her two sister sites of Albaicín and Generalife Garden, Alhambra is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the finest signs of Islamic opulence in Europe, the palace that stands today has seen several changes, extensions and removals since her original construction. Post-1492, after the end of the Moorish rule, major parts of Alhambra were destroyed and then later rebuilt in the Renaissance style by Charles V. So vast is the difference in the architectural styles of the two that you can notice sharp, visible contrasts between the actual Nasrid Palace and the Palace of Charles V, where the latter resided.

Thereafter, the fortress has withstood destruction and damage by French forces, lived through an earthquake and survived several natural and manmade calamities. From 1828 till as recent as the 21st century, restoration, renovation and conservation continue at this palace and its surrounding grounds.

Alhambra, a name derived from the Arabic words qal’at al-hamra, literally translates to ‘red fort’. And the grand palace-fort, with her fine decorative artwork, landscaped gardens and enchanting water fountains, still retains all her red-stone glory despite all the restorations.

Thanks to her history, spanning centuries, not just decades, Alhambra is one of Spain’s most prolific tourist destinations today. She can draw well over 6000 people on any given day!

Within The Walls of Alhambra

Before all the demolitions and restorations, Alhambra had 3 main sections within her walls. Apart from the palaces that housed the ruling Sultan and his kin, there was a Medina quarter and an Alcazaba base. The former was meant to be a residential area for court officials who worked at the palace and the latter was essentially a military base with residential complexes for the palace guards and their kin.

The palaces themselves were also divided into distinct areas. The Mexuar area was meant for state affairs and justice administration and hence was open to the public. The Comares Palace was the private and official residence of the Sultan and had the opulence that suited its purpose.

The Palace of Lions was the most private of areas as it was meant for the sole use of the royals. It had several rooms for the king and his mistresses and a beautiful outdoor area known as the Court of Myrtles. The palace opened up to what was known as the Courtyard of Lions, which held an enormous water fountain with twelve lion figurines.

Most of these still stand today for visitors to see. In addition to these, there are several small and large monuments and structures that are worth visiting here. The historical hall of Abencerrajes, which is said to be where a noble family was once gruesomely murdered, is notable for a ceiling that holds naturally formed stalactites. The Salon de Comares or Ambassadors Hall, Muqarnas Chamber, the Justice Gate, the great Hall of Boat, Puerta del Vino (Wine Gate) and several baths add more history and drama to the captivating stories of Alhambra.

Certain modern structures have also been added to Alhambra over the decades that passed. The most prominent of all being the statue of writer Washington Irving. It was erected in 2009, on the prolific writer’s 150th death anniversary, in the gardens outside the main palace.

The Exotic Generalife Garden

Walk over to the Cerro del Sol (Hill of the Sun) once you are done exploring the inner palaces. This is where you’ll find the Jannat al-arifa gardens (or Generalife as they are now called), some of the best, most well-preserved sections of the Nasrid estate. These well cultivated and well-maintained gardens are abundant in their greenery and stunning in their built-up architecture. Water fountains, marble canals, elaborate courtyards and pools add to the beauty of the gardens, which are made up of both ornamental as well as functional vegetation.

The contrast of the shaded patios with the sun-kissed gardens and reflective water pools make for the one-of-a-kind experience. Islamic creativity is still visible all throughout the gardens, especially when you take a closer look at the intricately carved stucco pillars and walls. Within the Generalife is a theatre where international song and dance performances are held even today.

Guided Tours of Alhambra & Generalife

You can book guided tours of Alhambra and Generalife. As there are restrictions regarding the number of visitors that Alhambra accepts per day, you should ideally book your tickets at least a month in advance to avoid disappointment. If you take a tour, you get a knowledgeable guide to take you through the history and architectural aspects of Alhambra. Besides, you also get to skip the queues, which is a big bonus considering as many as 6000 people are visiting on any given day!

Other Information On Alhambra Visits

It will take you at least 3 hours to do a tour of Alhambra and Generalife gardens. Since tickets are allocated according to time slots (that are strictly followed), keep in mind the time you will require for a leisurely tour before you purchase your tickets. Alhambra is closed each year from the 25th of December to the 1st of January. On all other days, there are separate day, evening and night timings that you can get here.

Whether you are a solo traveller or you are holidaying with your family, Granada is an excellent vacation destination. Not only does the city give you the best of Spain but it allows you to enjoy a trip to Alhambra!

BEST HALF-DAY HIKES NEAR JOHANNESBURG

So, I must tell you. I discovered the joys of hiking during this lockdown. 2020 may have brought with it several lows, insecurities and hassles, but it gave me a few good gifts as well. The biggest one being the gift of the beautiful outdoors. One I never really had the time nor a real inclination for. One, if I care to admit, I never really appreciated quite as I do now after spending weeks on end cooped up indoors.

And now that I have discovered the true joys of hiking in South Africa, or should I say, hiking near Johannesburg to be OCD specific, I am ready to widen my horizons and take up hiking and exploring even outside these local, regional or country boundaries. It has truly aroused the gypsy-spirit in me.

So, if I were to recommend the exact three hiking trails in and around Johannesburg that completely blew my mind with their challenge and their beauty, it would be the three listed below. Though these three hiking trails offer several long and short hiking options, I took the longer trails that truly are some of the best half-day hikes near Johannesburg both with and without social distancing, for when COVID ends (and it will end eventually, right?!)

Psst.. two of these three trails is a pet-friendly hiking trail. So go on, invite your dog over for a fun half-day of hiking too.

Milorho Hiking Trail

Milorho hiking trail in Rustenburg tops my list of favourite hikes near Johannesburg and it tops the list by a long shot. The trail offers stunning views, incredible landscapes, challenging terrain and captivating locations for photo-ops. That’s especially important for Instagram-lovers like me, and if you’re not, which rock have you been living under, really? Go hiking in the Magaliesberg mountains and you’ll soon have your Instagram profile, I almost guarantee it!

Jokes apart though, the Milorho hiking trail is a veritable treasure when it comes to experiencing local flora and fauna at its finest, no matter the season. The trail is so incredibly beautiful even during the dry winters that I just cannot wait to try it out during the gloriously green summers.

The geology is unique too. Exciting rock formations that invite you to climb them, yawning gorges that you wish you had the heart to look down into (I didn’t, gosh some were scary), cascading waterfalls and refreshing rock pools hit you (stun you would be more appropriate here) with intermittent awe as you walk up and down and down and up in a series of semi-challenging manoeuvrers.

I wouldn’t call this a beginner’s hiking trail exactly for it is long and tiring, and some tiny bits require climbing over. But then, I wouldn’t exactly call it difficult either. Especially not when a currently-overweight fat cow like myself managed to do them with good time too. Of course, I wouldn’t exactly drag along my 5-year old either you know. But you know what I mean. These hikes are doable by almost everyone that is reasonably fit.

Now to give you some actually useful information about the Milorho Hiking trail near information. I mean I could go on and on singing praises, for I really did love the longer, green trail, but then again, I was told by my blogging guru, that my blog needs to offer some value to my readers. So, with a slightly less elated heart, here goes:

Milorho Hiking Trails begin at Milorho Lodge and need to be pre-booked. The trails are open for hikers from Monday through to Sunday between 7:30AM and 4:30PM.

There are two hiking trails to choose from. The shorter, brown trail is of 5kms and takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete. Charges are R100 per adult and R50 per child under 12. The green hiking trail on the other hand is 12.5kms if you stick to the pathways. (Yeah, well, we wandered off and made it about 15). This path is slightly challenging and requires about 6 hours to complete, more if you intend to spend time by the rock pools or if you take a sudden fancy to an occasional tempting and climb-worthy rock! The charges for the green trail are the same as those for the brown one.

There are blue and green signboards along the path. But to be honest, they are not always there where you want them to be. I did get lost a slight bit and that contributed to my 12.5km walk going up to almost 15 too!

Since the entrance to the trails is through the Milhoro Lodge property, you will need to call in from the main gate for someone from the lodge to open the gates for you. There is ample parking and maps are given out at the lodge reception. A quaint little coffee shop and a woodworking studio are the surprises that await you at the reception.

The long walk is tiring, make no mistake, no matter how fit you consider yourself to be. There are some tricky bits where you are walking along a narrow cliff part with a small stream on one side and the rockface on the other (right near the end). There are also bits where the walk is boring where you feel like you are just walking round and round to make up for the kilometres. But keep your eyes and ears open and there is no much to enjoy. Lizards and salamanders darting out here and there, traditional (and endangered) aloe peglarae in full glory, and caves and crevices that are ideal for the most novel photos.

Slather on the sunscreen. No matter how many times you slather it on, if you are not well dressed, prepare to be sunburnt. Despite the sunscreen, I had a sunburn, I had the itching and peeling that followed and I had the pain, so be forewarned. Of course, hiking shoes and water are a must too.

Start early. The trail gets more tedious as the sun shines brighter and the day progresses. Start early and aim to finish by 2PM or so to get the best joy out of your trail hike.

The rockpools are by far the best part of this hike. You’ll be tempted to spend a lot of time enjoying one that comes on top of the hill less than halfway into the hike. But you can take it easy. Just before the last leg of the trail are a series of lovely (and slightly shallow) pools that you can take a break (or enjoy a picnic) at. Don’t cool down for too long though, otherwise, the very last uphill climb from the rock pools to the parking lot feels like it is never going to end! Just take my word for it, will you?

Pets are not allowed on these trails. The trails are open for day visitors but you can also book a stay at the lodge is you wish to convert a day hike into a short staycation instead.

De Wildt Hiking Trail

Another super hike near Johannesburg is the De Wildt hiking, walking and jogging trail. This pet-friendly adventure trail has several things going for it:

It is pet-friendly of course. And there is nothing quite like the fun of hiking and exploring with your dog.

It has multiple hiking trails and thus offers options to choose from. The 10km Peglarae trail that I went on is about 7kms and challengingly steep on the incline for the first few kilometers. There is also a maze hike, a picnic hike, a pensioners hike and a jungle hike too, to name a few.

They have an excellent picnic and braai area, and also a play area for kids. You can thus make a beautiful day out of your hike, with your family and pets too.

Picnic baskets are available on pre-booking and they are absolutely delicious.

The hikes end with stunning views from the top of the hill and that is definitely an added bonus, but there is also a lovely farm dam and some farm animals to keep kids occupied.

Overall, De Wildt offers something for the whole family, for the adults, kids and pets alike.

To tell you the truth, I went on a father daughters’ hike to De Wildt. It was with my dad, of course, and my sister. So it could be that I had one added dimension to enjoy this hike more. That said, we combined the 4.6kms Kiepersol trail and the 7km Peglarae trail to make a day of it.

The Kiepersol is super easy, and I intend to take my 5-year old with me the next time I go. Yeah, that easy! The Peglarae is tougher and the first 2 odd kilometers are steep enough incline to get you huffing and puffing.

I am compelled to tell you just how glorious the rock features and streams on this trail are. There is one patch that walks you right through an entire rock mountainside, right through a trickling waterfall. Mind you, I went in peak winter. After the summer rains, the trickle could easily be a gushing mountain stream.

Ensure that you wear good shoes because there are several tricky bits on this trail that will have you thanking the gods that your shoes have a good grip. Though the trail is marked at most points, it is still easy to miss a market and get lost. My sister did just fine but I had to trudge through the nettles and an unexpected forest when I got lost halfway up the climb.

Enough of the experiential bit, let’s get down to some real information now.

De Wildt adventure trails are about 30 minutes away from Johannesburg and approximately 45 minutes from Pretoria. Start early so you get up to the top without bearing the brunt of the hot sun. Yeah, those of you who have been to South Africa, you know how bad the sun is here.

Not all trails allow pets. So before you book a hike for yourself and your dog, be sure to ensure that your dog is actually allowed on the trail you have chosen. On some trails, there are also restrictions on the size of the dog. Since some trails have precarious footing, large dogs are not allowed. Be sure to check in advance.

De Wildt trails are open from Wednesday to Sunday from 7AM to 3PM, Mondays and Tuesdays are off.

Different trails have different entry fees. For example, it is R60 for adults, R30 for kids between 2 and 10 years of age and R15 for infants on the Kiepersol trail. They have recently even launched a wonderful campaign where kids who complete the Kiepersol trail are given a trekker medal.

I went on the unguided Peglarae 7km trail and the price was R100 per adult with the Kiepersol trail added in for no extra cost. The 12.5km Groenklip trail costs R120 per adult and requires prebooking since it is a guided tour.

The Nek to Nek Historic Hike is for groups of minimum 20 people only. Pre-booking is a must for this guided tour and the cost is R150 per person.

Once you reach the top of the hill and get the views of one side of the mountain, don’t forget to walk to the other side and take in the views there. You get great visuals of Hartbeespoort dam and the other slopes of the Magaliesberg mountains.

Shelter Rock

Shelter Rock is a beautiful and challenging hiking trail, also in the Magaliesberg. It is named after a huge boulder that dislodged itself from the mountain approximately 10,000 years ago. The huge yellow rock now sits on one of the cliffs and is quite the landmark when viewed from several kilometers away. It is great fun to climb the rock (and it is scary on the way down), but it is most definitely not the end of the Shelter Rock hiking trail. The trail goes on and on, further, highers till you reach the actual top of the mountain.

The start of the hike is through a forest-y area and this lulls you into thinking that the trail is easy. It is most definitely not, at least not one the inclines start. I would rate it to be moderately difficult. As you near the end, you really struggle if the sun’s beating down on you. I had several moments where I thought I’d reached the top, only for the trail markers to continue further and further ahead.

The visuals from the top of the mountain are unreal on a clear day. You have several photo opportunities throughout the trail thanks to glorious, natural rock formations and clear open skies. Though I really didn’t see it, many say that on clear days you can even catch glimpses of the mountains of Sun City from here.

Shelter rock, just by the way, is not only for hikers. It caters to school outings, picnics and even adventure activities such as abseiling and team building. There is also a golf course in the vicinity if you are a golfing enthusiast. In addition, there is a camp, mountain lodge, restaurant and coffee shop if you’d like to convert your day hike into a vacation.Did I forget to mention the most important point before? Shelter Rock is a pet-friendly hike near Johannesburg. For hikers and day visitors, the rates per person are R80 for adults, R40 for children between 6 and 16, and R40 for dogs on a leash. Kids under 5 are free. Shelter Rock is open to hikers on Saturdays, Sundays and all public holidays. On weekdays, bookings must be made and paid for in advance.

So, while this time is here, while this time is now, try substituting the cinemas and malls with hikes. You need no specialized gear other than a good pair of shoes and walking sticks (if you are particular and must have those). Just that and a healthy desire to get started should do the trick and get you hooked on walks and hikes in Johannesburg and beyond.

They say that the best way to understand a culture is to look at its art, and that is especially so with street art! All along the cruise, you get to see stunning views of Chapmans Peak Drive and Sentinel Mountain. Drumbeat cruises are wheelchair accessible. Tickets cost R100 per adult, R50 for children who are 14 and under, while kids under 2 years are free. Their boats comply with all safety and security measures and they only employ qualified and competent skippers. This is a huge relief considering the temperamental weather of Cape Town.

Heritage Tours of V&A Waterfront

There are 22 historical landmarks at the V&A Waterfront and even without this official figure, there is plenty to explore here. Guided walking tours run for about 90-minutes from the Chavonnes Battery Museum, the oldest heritage site in the harbour. The winding walking tour then takes you to all famous and historic landmarks such as the Clock Tower, Robinson Dry Dock, Breakwater Prison and the Pump House, which is now home to the Cape Town Comedy Club.

Post the tour, head over to Shimansky Cape Town Diamond Museum in Clock Tower District to learn about South Africa’s glittering diamond history. If you are on the other side, check out the Two Oceans Aquarium instead. The aquarium is a treasure trove of local sea life in and around South Africa. If you are particularly adventurous, you can feed the penguins or scuba dive in the I&J Ocean Exhibit.

The best way to explore Robertsons Wine Valley is to take a wine valley safari tour. These fun tours, which follow a different route each day, bring on the super excitement of being in an open-air safari vehicle. As you travel through the endless vineyards, you get 360-degree views of the landscape as far as the mountains go.

You can choose between different tours, they have everything from freestyle hop-on hop-off tours, wine tasting tours, cellar tours and even lavender farming tours. The cultural tour of McGregor Village also comes highly recommended, as do their vine and wine sunset safaris and their Nkqubela township tours.

Robben Island Tours

Weather permitting, Robben Island Museum conducts general tours from Monday to Saturday, running to Robben Island from mainland Cape Town. These tours take about 4 hours with two half-hour ferry trips on a Sikhi.The ferries depart from Nelson Mandela Gateway at V&A Waterfront and disembark at Murray’s Bay Harbour. Thereafter, buses take you all the historical sites on the island, including the maximum-security prison that held South Africa’s most prominent freedom fighters including Nelson Mandela. Inside the prison, knowledgeable tour guides (sometimes even actual prisoners who were held there) give you a guided tour of the prison and the island, and tell you stories from the personal experiences of the prisoners there.
